- Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease and flour a 22-24 cm (8-9 inch) round cake pan.
- Prepare the dry ingredients: In a bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, and a pinch of salt. Set aside.
- Mix the wet ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk the eggs and sugar until pale and fluffy. Add the softened butter and vanilla extract, and continue whisking until the mixture is smooth.
- Combine the wet and dry ingredients: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with the milk. Mix until just combined, making sure not to overmix.
- Transfer the dough to the pan: Pour the cake dough into the prepared pan, spreading it evenly.
- Add apple slices (optional step): If you like, you can add thinly sliced apples on top of the dough before baking.
- Bake the cake: Place the pan in the oven and bake for about 40-45 minutes or until golden brown and a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
- Cool and serve: Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely. Serve with powdered sugar on top if desired.
