Chocolate Orange Cheesecake Layer Cake

  • 2 cups cream cheese (room temperature)
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • Zest of 1 orange
  • 2 tbsp freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Chocolate Ganache:

  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate, chopped

Orange Whipped Cream (optional):

  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tbsp powdered sugar
  • Zest of ½ orange
  • 1 tbsp orange juice

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Chocolate Cake:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add the oil, milk, eggs, vanilla, orange zest, and orange juice. Mix until smooth.
  4. Pour the batter into one of the prepared cake pans and bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  5. Allow the cake to cool completely before assembling.

2. Make the Orange Cheesecake Layer:

  1. In a bowl, beat the cream cheese and sugar until smooth.
  2. Add the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  3. Stir in orange zest, orange juice, and vanilla extract.
  4. Pour this mixture into the second cake pan and bake for 20-25 minutes at 350°F (175°C) or until set.
  5. Let the cheesecake cool completely in the pan, then chill it for at least 1 hour.

3. Prepare the Chocolate Ganache:

  1. Heat the heavy cream in a small saucepan until it starts to simmer.
  2. Remove from heat, add the chopped chocolate, and let sit for 5 minutes.
  3. Stir until smooth, then let cool to a thick but pourable consistency.

4. Assemble the Cake:

  1. Place the chocolate cake layer on a serving plate.
  2. Carefully place the chilled orange cheesecake layer on top of the chocolate cake.
  3. Pour the chocolate ganache over the top, letting it drip down the sides.
  4. For extra decoration, pipe the orange whipped cream on top.

5. Make the Orange Whipped Cream (Optional):

  1. Beat the heavy cream with powdered sugar until soft peaks form.
  2. Add orange zest and juice, then continue beating until stiff peaks form.

Serving Suggestions:

  • Decorate with orange zest curls or chocolate shavings.
  • Serve chilled for a refreshing contrast between the rich chocolate and tangy orange flavors.
